Description

I have always thought of myself as a Fall/Winter person. I love to get cozy with all the woolens and a hot beverage to watch the fall colors come to life outside. After all the dark and rainy days in the typical PNW year, I forget how much I crave the sun and the heat on my skin. The return of the sun, lightens my mood and I want to be in the sunshine at all times! This shawl is inspired by the return of the sun and how it fills me with so much joy while it is out and shining here in the PNW. The crescent shape of this shawl provides the perfect backdrop for my depiction of the sun casting down its rays. The generous wingspan is like being wrapped up in a warm hug. I envisioned two-color brioche as a fun way to have the rays radiate from the sun.

My Sunray Shawl is knit from the top down beginning with a Garter Tab Cast-On. This shawl is worked back and forth utilizing soothing garter stitch and fun two-color brioche. Garter stitch is used to create the sun at the top of the shawl and throughout the body to portray the sky-like background. Two-color brioche is incorporated to mimic sunrays coming down the body of the shawl. As the shawl expands, additional two-color brioche ‘rays’ are worked to continue with the theme of the shawl. Brioche is continued in the border and finished with an I-Cord Bind-Off. Increases are made on both the right and wrong side of the edges to create a crescent shape. Long shawl wings are created this way to easily wrap around the body to provide warmth and stability.
